I did this project to make a 3D animated short based on a cat video.
At the company I used to work for, almost all character animation was done with motion capture technology. Even in the “Long She Yan Yi” project, the protagonist’s facial expressions are also used motion capture technology. This made me less interested in character animations, which can already be done in a very fast and cheap way. My previous project, “Jiu Ye Shen Zhuan”, can complete one episode in more than a week on average, including the rendering time. So I turned my goals and the focus of my research to animals. After all, motion capture of animals is not very common these days, and it is not easy to make animals do the actions that the video needs to do. Therefore, the research mainly focuses on the study of animal behavior and the production of 3D animation in this area. And I have a cat named Mo Qi, I love animals.
This video is a video I shot a while back about birds. At that time, I finished visiting the museum with my classmates, just in time for the Christmas market at the entrance of the museum. We bought hot dogs at the market, and the leftovers were placed on the guardrail and the pigeons in the square came to grab the food. In the end, the pigeons threw the hot dog bun directly over the guardrail. I filmed this funny scene and intend to use this video as a reference to make a 3D animation.

This video is a video I shot a while back about my cat. His name is Moqi (万俟), it’s my Ragdoll cat. He is 2 years old. At that time, a fly flew into my room. Mo Qi thought it was very interesting, so he started to play with it. Cats especially like small things that move, and flies are one of them. This video starts from Moqi discovering the fly and playing with it, then the fly flies out of the window, and at the end, Moqi can only lie on the window and look out.
I have many videos about Moqi, but I think this one is the most suitable, not only the length of the video is right, but also this video is telling a very complete story. From the time the flies came in, the cat played with the flies, until the flies flew out, and finally Moqi lay on the windowsill and looked out. No one was hurt during this period, and the poor fly was free. Moreover, when Moqi is playing with flies, the range of motion is also very large, which is very worthy of research and the production of animated short films.
This video is what I intend to use as a reference for my 2nd project. This video is about pigeons. My friend and I went out to see the museum to see the exhibition. We happened to meet a Christmas booth outside, so we bought hot dogs here. In the end, the hot dogs that could not be eaten were found by the pigeons, so Fly over to eat. This video is very interesting. And the overall length is about 45 seconds, the time is just right.
As I said in my blog before, because of the rapid development of motion capture technology, many animations of characters now use motion capture. The company I practiced at before did the same, and even many of the protagonists had facial expressions captured. So I want to try to do some motions that cannot be captured by motion capture technology at present, such as cats and pigeons, which is why I chose this reference for animation.
This cat reference is also an alternative that I was going to choose as an animation. This video shows my cat Moqi sitting on my dad’s PAD and never moving away. But my dad wanted to get a PAD, so teased him with a comma stick, trying to distract him and get these PADs. In the end, Moqi sat here and didn’t move away at all. On the contrary, the Pad was turned on because of his violent movements and was glowing, so the overall effect was very interesting.
However, my instructor told me that because the animation of my first personal project was going to be a cat, if the animation in this section continued to be a cat, it would cause duplication of content, so I crossed out this reference and chose to be a pigeon. that one.
After searching the video I recorded about my cat Moqi, I found a very suitable video for my animation. There was a fly on my windowsill. Moqi saw it and felt curious about it, so she went to play. The fly finally flew out the window, leaving Moqi to lean over and lookout. This animation is very interesting. And in the end, the fly flew away and no one was hurt. It was a good time, about a minute in all.

Most of the role of our animators is just to adjust the motion capture. Animal-related animation, however, continues frame by frame. Even with the advent of cat or other animal capture technology. Because of the language gap between humans and animals, it is difficult for animals to perform in accordance with human ideas. So studying animal-related animation is very useful and irreplaceable in the short term.
At last I really missed my cat, Moqi. Every time I videotape with my parents, he always runs around and is not interested in me behind the camera. I really want to see him again and touch him.
